Its activity is characterized by innovation in the selection and genetic improvement of bees, as well as by the implementation of traceability processes that guarantee the quality and adaptability of its biological material to the specific needs of each beekeeping client. This business model is an innovation for the Colombian beekeeping sector. The company aspires to be the first beekeeping hive in the country specifically dedicated to producing genetically selected and improved biological beekeeping material, following the example of successful models in other countries around the world. This means offering better options for the country's beekeepers and beekeeping companies, opening up new possibilities in the domestic market.
The entrepreneur Camila Trujillo, a zootechnician graduated from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, has 15 years of experience in beekeeping. She has specialized in sustainable bee breeding and genetic improvement of Africanized queens. She has applied her knowledge in the development of genetic selection processes, resulting in an innovative method that includes traceability and allows maintaining a permanent supply.
It handles 5 types of basic biological material products, species Apis mellifera africanizada:
Bee packages
Nuclei of bees
Developing hives
Virgin queens
Fertilized queens
Beekeeping training courses
Commercialization of beekeeping equipment and tools
MellisApis was born in 2019 as an initiative promoting the care and conservation of bees. The initial idea was to offer the market a line of nutritious and healthy products for people. In 2020, given the situation, I decided to move to the rural area and install the working apiary on the same property. It was an opportunity to test different bee breeding protocols.
In 2021, we set up the first apiary school and began to conduct training courses. Partnerships were made with the Kaukitá reserve to install an apiary in the forest and with apiarios del café, who are our current suppliers of modular boxes. We launched our website in 2022, through which we continually receive requests and inquiries about courses, products, consulting and training.
In the same year, we began to participate in events and fairs, making our products and services known locally. These are some of the most important activities we carried out during 2023. It has been a year of radical changes, since, in the first place, we began to work on the development of our products and services.
